I am happy with the presidential inauguration

I realize that this title might make some of my Face Book friends and followers angry, but I am quite sincere about the title and the content of this blog. I did not write or name this bog with any intention of causing anger, but I hope that it will produce some thought.

Yes, I am happy that the inauguration two weeks ago happened as it did. There was a peaceful transfer of power from one elected president to another. This is how things are supposed to happen in the United States. This process of transferring power is one of the things that really makes this country great. It seems to me that I once read in a history textbook that when George Washington welcomed John Adams as our second president, newspaper reports from all over the world came to witness the event. Most nations did not believe that power would be transferred. Our nation showed how different we were from the European monarchies when power was passed from one president to another.

It was because of this show of greatness that I was so embarrassed four years ago during the inauguration of Joe Biden. He did not embarrass me, but Donald Trump not showing up to that inauguration, did embarrass me. Showing up to your successor’s inauguration is a sign that our nation is great. Much to my chagrin, that did not happen four years ago. The absence of Donald Trump was an embarrassment. Whether or not we like the outcome of an election, it shows a bit of class to welcome in the winner of an election and to attend the inauguration.

In a similar vein, I was happy when Donald’s election was certified by the congress. I shook my head in shame four years ago when Donald’s supporters stormed the capital, causing members of congress to run for their lives, damaging a building that belongs to the taxpayers, and causing the deaths of several law enforcement officers. That was an American disgrace.

Four years from that inaugural debacle, I have once again seen an election be certified with proper protocols. This year I have seen winners and losers of an election accept the results in a proper fashion. Unlike four years ago, an outgoing president showed class and decorum by showing hospitality to an incoming president and attending the inauguration.

So, you might ask, do I like the outcome of the election? Perhaps you are wondering who I supported in the election and if I have a political party affiliation. These questions will not be answered. I believe that what, if any political party leanings that I have are personal. In my work of Christian ministry, I must be able to minister, in the name of Jesus, to people of every political persuasion. Many elections have caused me to be happy and many have caused me anxiety. Yet, I have always been happy with the peaceful transfer of power that is a hallmark of our country. I was embarrassed four years ago. This year I was truly pleased that this happened.
