The election is over. What are we going to do?

The election is over. What are we going to do?

For whatever reason, I have Facebook friends from every possible political brand. I didn’t try to accomplish this; it happened by itself. I read posts from friends with completely different opinions. It gets interesting when I read posts from one point of view that insult those of another point of view. Prior to our most recent election, I kept reading posts proclaiming the death of America if the other candidate would win the election.

Now that the election has ended and Donald beat Kamala, these posts have not changed very much. Supporters of Kamala now proclaim that the nation as we know it is gone. Supporters of Donald are almost deifying him as the savior of our nation. Kamala supporters are asking the question, “what are we going to do?”

I am reminded of my first year in college when Jimmy Carter defeated Gerald Ford for the presidency. I went to college in Western Michigan, a short distance from where Gerald Ford grew up. Students there were devasted when the election went to a Southern Baptist. Some students asked, “what are we going to do?” Others threatened to move to Canada, but I did not know anyone who actually did.

Four years later I was a first-year seminary student. The students were academics who leaned to the left of the political spectrum. Many were worried that Ronald Reagan would defeat Jimmy Carter. When Ronald won, there was concern that he would start a nuclear war. Again, I heard the question, “what are we going to do?”

Few people wanted to hear my answer to that question. My answer has not changed, “Love God above all things and next, love (seek the highest blessing of) your neighbor. That is what we need to do.

What else do we need to do? We need to “do justice, love righteousness, and walk humbly with God.”

Politicians come and politicians go. The political spectrum of America shifts every few years. We see this pattern in history and we see plenty of current examples. No matter who is president or who is not president, there are things that we need to do. Those things are what God requires of us. Let us be more concerned about God and less worried about politics. Above all, let us never put our trust in princes. They are mere mortals, just like we are. Yes, I did vote. I always do, but I’m never devastated if my choice of candidate loses.

If you voted for Kamala, what should you do? Please see above.

If you voted for Donald, what should you do? Please see above.

If you voted for a third-party candidate, what should you do? Please see above.

If you didn’t vote, what should you do? Please see above.
